How To Disguise That Tummy
When it comes to clothing, it needs to serve several purposes. Provide comfort, fit well, feel great and give you confidence. It also needs to bring out those good bits and disguise the not so great bits and it's bloody awesome when you figure out which items do just that.
We all have an area we don't love about ourselves and lots of women struggle with a troublesome tummy area. Myself included. I like to blame my babies (coz that's when the belly became an issue) but the truth is, my youngest is now three, so "baby weight" is no longer a valid excuse.
So, if , like me, you like cake and wine and haven't seen the inside of a gym in too long, then you might have a wee tummy too.
But fear not, there are plenty of ways to look fab and feel confident by concealing that tummy area you’d rather not draw attention to, and it doesn't involve diet pills and laying off the wine AT ALL!
So it goes without saying that wearing tight or clingy clothing over your tummy area will only accentuate every roll and lump you have and draw attention away from your best bits, but hiding a belly under baggy clothes can make you look frumpy and bigger than you actually are.
Layering is a very effective way to disguise a belly. Waterfall or straight cardigans, vests and jackets will create a vertical line which will lengthen you and will draw the eye down, without adding bulk. Short straight cardigans will hide your belly too, but will have an overall more boxy silhouette.
Airy blouses that drift away from the body are a great option for women who don’t want to draw attention to their tummies. The flowy fit is not only physically comfortable, but it will effectively hide those bulges.
Consider a top with a long, uneven hemline which will draw attention towards the bottom half of your body and away from your tummy. While you want to avoid the dowdy style of oversized clothing, a trendy jumper or cardi is still a great option for hiding the tummy area.
To dodge that unflattering baggy look, don’t go up in size. Instead, opt for something with a wider hemline. The extra flare will hide your tummy.
Asymmetrical dresses, tunics and wrap dresses work well as they draw attention away from the belly and create a vertical line. Busy prints and patterns also a great disguise for a rounded belly.
Bags with longer straps will elongate your body, making you look taller and leaner, whereas those that tuck right under your arm will put the focus right at your stomach area.
Shapewear is fantastic for flattening and even hiding your tummy but my tip is to save it for nights out and occasions only, as opposed to daily. It can get restrictive and uncomfy, especially during the warmer months.
Leggings and stretchy pants, with a wider band at the top or elastic flat front offer maximized coverage and therefore hold your stomach in similar to how shapewear would. Additionally, high-waisted trousers and jeans do the same to really help streamline your tummy and avoid a muffin top.
Avoid tucking in your tops at it draws attention to your tummy area. Pay attention to overall balance and don’t let your top end at the widest point of your hips.Don't forget that accessories can play a big part in your outfit and you may be drawing focus to your stomach area without realising it.
Adding belts to your outfits isn't a great idea as they sit right on top of the area you're aiming to disguise. Avoid trying to cover up with a wide belt around your stomach. A statement belt will only put the focus on your tummy. Light and bright colours draw attention so opt for darker colours on your top half to conceal the midriff.
The trick is to give it some thought.
